Gone But Not
So it has been longer than planned since I last typed anything here. And, truth be told, this is not going to be anything overly thought out. What with viruses and home schooling and economies going the wrongest of directions and, well, really just life right now, I feel at least kind of good just getting this out. I mean, I did find what looks to be a really quite interesting article on the acoustics of caves which kind of ties back into the flute post…but, I haven’t read it yet.
But, what I have done over the time of staying not out is rediscovered some things that, once upon a time made me smile. And, some of those things, inevitably, have been songs. Most of this music originally fell into the general category of “I like this, but not enough to invest in an album right now.” Later on you could cross out album and put in “iTunes track.” And later still they just became the sort of things that one goes and sees if they’re on YouTube. Which, in the following cases, they were.
Lyle Lovett – Here I Am – I’m not sure if this counts as “Texas Swing”. I mean, he is Texan I think and it does swing…so yeah, maybe.
Bruce Springsteen – War – I am not a big Springsteen fan. Gotta respect him tho… And, the downbeat on this song is just about perfect. E Street is apparently New Jersian for tight. I was reminded of this track after having the original come on the radio the other day. In some ways, I kind of like Mr. Springsteen’s version better.
The First Edition – Just Dropped In (I am completely and in all other ways opposed to parenthetical titles so I refuse to include this one).
Gerry Raffery – Get it Right Next Time – Ummm…I feel like I should point out that any number of these tracks were released, strictly speaking, before my time…These guys are my new standard for laid back. I’m not sure, but I think the bass player here is Mo Foster who was kind of a first call studio legend for years.
Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sitta – I kind of half remember this song from when I came out, but there was alot going on right about then. But, in the here and now, it’s kind of fun.
Laurie Anderson – O Superman – It’s Art!
Jerry Reed – Lightning Rod – It’s a different art.
Kate Bush and Rowan Atkinson – Do Bears – Basically, neither of these two can do much wrong.
Jan and Dean – Dead Man’s Curve – I was thinking about car crash songs as a really specific genre and this was the earliest one I could think of off the top of my head.
Patty Loveless – I Try To Think About Elvis – Yup, I smiled.
Finally, one that isn’t old at all. Tony Allen died last week, which got me to go back and listen to some of his amazing output again. I’m not sure I remember this one or if I even ever heard it in the first place, but it does not suck.
Tony Allen – Wolf Eats Wolf
That’s it for now. Keep learning and keep yourself and those around you healthy.
